Voices of Our City Choir changes the experience and perception of homelessness, helping San Diego's unsheltered neighbors reconnect with hope and housing through the healing power of music, individualized care, and advocacy.

We have helped over 65 people move from homelessness and into housing in 5 years. With your help, we could do so much more.

Professional musicians, staff and volunteers provide a safe space each week for music making – this is our “outreach” without it feeling like outreach. We offer the unsheltered community the space and opportunity to connect with themselves through the healing power of group singing, songwriting and guitar workshops.

Our choir members are given the option to work with our Case Managers and Peer Support Specialists (individuals who have lived experience of homelessness). Our staff is trained to recognize the individual, build a strong rapport and connect the person with the resources that are available to them. Many people are suffering from a variety of PTSD, a lifetime of traumas, abuses, financial hardship, as well as health and/or addiction issues. It is important to mention that we work at their pace, thus building trust and a bond that values them as a person. (Usually the individual is ready to work towards a plan within 2 to 3 weeks).

Our community welcomes all of society – unsheltered/homeless individuals, recently sheltered but near poverty line and in fear of returning to homelessness, as well as housed and stable members of our society who want to be a part of the solution. We work together to grow and learn from each other, offer guidance, redirect behavioral issues and encourage transformation. With over 225 members, Voices of Our City Choir weekly Friday rehearsals and programs have become a beacon of hope for those who have lost their direction and humanity through the demoralizing experiencing of homelessness.

The choir members are invited to perform all around Southern California with an award winning live soul/jazz band each month. We have collaborated with major artists, the San Diego Symphony and have become an in demand professional performance ensemble with up to 7 performances in a single month. We have also brought our collective voice to local and regional government to inspire more compassionate policy measures that yield lasting results. Public speaking and live performing offer our members an immediate opportunity to develop and professionalize their speaking and presentation skills. Our public presentations and concerts also offer the general population the opportunity to see that people experiencing homelessness are people - human beings with hopes and dreams - and how homelessness could happen to anyone.

We support the individual suffering homelessness by providing community and support, which in turn benefits all of society. San Diego is the 4th largest population of homelessness in the country and we are dedicated to radically improving the lives of all San Diegans by accomplishing our mission. Everyone experiences a level of suffering when we allow those in need to continue to parish on our streets. We have a chance to drastically change the lives of those affected by homelessness by working together.
