America’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer Winner, Voices of Our City Choir, kicks off 2025 concert season at Congregation Beth Israel

Voices of Our City, a nonprofit and creative community for artists impacted by homelessness, is proud to present Hours of Freedom: A Journey of Music, Art, & the Human Spirit. This powerful evening will take place on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 7 PM at Congregation Beth Israel in San Diego.

In a unique pairing of music and conversation, the choir will join forces with USA Today best-selling author Jennifer Coburn to explore the themes of survival, hope, and the strength of the human spirit. Coburn will kick off her national book tour with a conversation about her novel, The Girls of the Glimmer Factory. Coburn’s newest novel is set in the Nazi "model" concentration camp of Theresienstadt, where a choir of prisoners used music as resistance, survival, and a symbol of hope.  Author Jennifer Coburn, who is donating all Jan. 23rd book proceeds to Voices of Our City, shares, “I am so honored to participate in this event that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and healing power of music. I have been a fan of Voices of Our City for many years and have so much admiration for all they do. We need music and art more than ever, and I’m excited to share the story of the prisoner choir at Theresienstadt and listen to the soulful music of Voices.”

The evening will feature a performance featuring original music the Voices of Our City Choir, led by Creative Director Steph Johnson. Voices’ Choir, which gained national recognition after winning the Golden Buzzer on NBC’s America's Got Talent, will share powerful music written from the choir members’ journeys out of homelessness (in collaboration with professional jazz musicians)—demonstrating how creativity can offer a lifeline, especially in times of darkness. Through music, the choir brings light to difficult struggles, resonating with the words of Rabbi Leo Baeck, who referred to music as “Hours of Freedom.”

Hours of Freedom is more than just a concert; it’s a conversation about resilience and the healing power of art. Join us for a night of music, conversation, and inspiration as we explore how hope can be found through connection, creativity, and shared humanity.

All proceeds benefit Voices of Our City’s music & arts programming for San Diegans impacted by homelessness. Tickets available now, visit https://www.voicesofourcity.org/hours-of-freedom
